12 Days of Christmas Baking – Day 4: Brandon Jew (of Mister Jui’s) Mrs. Jew’s Crispy Cookies

12 days of christmas baking -- mrs. jew's crispy cookies

I must be going down memory lane here. It’s been so long since I last made this recipe, Mrs. Jew’s crispy cookies (you can see the original blog post here). I honestly don’t remember the last time I made these, but I’m so glad I made them this year. I’d forgotten how good these are! I’m not sure what you’d call them. They’re kind of like your classic chocolate chip cookie, but not quite. Also kind of like the good old oatmeal raisin cookie with the raisins, but also note quite an oatmeal raisin because there’s no oatmeal. I think the star ingredient is the crispy rice cereal. It gives you that nice crunch when you bite into it, and the raisins and chocolate help round it out.

This was a recipe shared by an SF chef, Brandon Jew (over 10 years ago when he was at Bar Agricole) who now has a restaurant of his own, Mister Jui’s (still need to check it out whenever I’m back in SF). I forget what the backstory to this recipe was, but whatever it was, these Mrs. Jew’s crispy cookies caught my attention 10 years ago. I’m so glad I wrote the recipe down, and that I decided to revisit/remake them this year. It’s one I’ll have to make a note of and put in my baking rotation.

These Mrs. Jew’s crispy cookies are super simple to make. You really just need a bowl and fork to whip it up, no need for a mixer or any fancy gadget. Give it a try if you’re curious and let me know what you think. Now, if you missed day 3, go and check it out. These cinnamon rolls are sure to delight anyone on Christmas morning or any morning. Okay, stay tuned for what day 4 will bring!
